Centering Prayer Group
What: Centering Prayer is a silent, contemplative Christian prayer method pioneered by Thomas Keating. This prayer invites us to detach from our thoughts (and the feelings and emotions they stir) and instead focus our attention on the Divine Reality that is both present and working within us. All thoughts and intentions other than openness to God are set aside as we fall deeper into silence and return again and again to Presence.
Who: You! Whether you are new to the practice of Centering Prayer or have been a regular practitioner for years, you are invited to join us and pray in a communal context. If you are interested in exploring contemplative prayer as part of your spiritual life, you will find welcome here. If you are looking to practice with a welcoming and supportive community, and add a bit of accountability as well, this is for you. Even if you just need or desire a few minutes of dedicated silence in a noisy world, know that is okay, too.
Why: In our busy, chaotic, even isolated and lonely lives, practicing in a communal context offers stability, support, and accountability. Centering Prayer is a silent prayer method, and the depth and quality of our silence increases when experienced together.
Format: Our gatherings will be simple and consistent. As we begin to form this group, we will offer a brief overview of the Centering Prayer method and invite you into the experience with a short reading, perhaps a poem, scripture, or other text. We will practice for a shorter length of time, take a few minutes rest, and then practice for the full 20 minutes recommended for this prayer. For the time remaining in the hour, there will be an opportunity to share briefly about your experience, if desired, or continue to hold and rest in the contemplative space. There is no need to bring anything or prepare in any particular way. Come as you are.
When: The first Mondays of every month starting on February 2, 2026 from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. (Feb 2 March 2, April 6, etc.)
Where: We will meet in the Meditation Chapel at the Community of Christ Temple in Independence. The Temple address is 201 S. River Blvd, Independence, MO 64050. Plan to enter at the Main (East) Circle Drive Entrance.
We cannot wait to see you and practice with you!

Haunted By God: A One Woman Production about Dorothy Day
An inspiring one-woman show is coming to the Community of Christ Temple on Saturday, March 14 at 7 PM! HAUNTED BY GOD: THE LIFE OF DOROTHY DAY is a moving dramatic portrait of one of the most outspoken and influential American Catholics of the 20th century. The production incorporates all the wit and prophetic grit of Dorothy’s own words about war, peace, American society, compassion, and protest in the Spirit of Jesus. This performance is offered by the talented Lisa Wagner. See her full bio below.
This show will take place in the Temple Meditation Chapel.
The suggested ticket donation $20.
Produced in association with Call to Action.
Lisa Wagner is the founder and director of Still Point Theatre Collective. She founded the company in 1993, motivated by a strong desire to combine ministry and theatre. For over fifteen years, she has toured the country and overseas with Haunted by God: The Life of Dorothy Day. While researching the play, she met the St. Catherine of Genoa Catholic Worker community. After volunteering in the house for six months, she became a full-time Catholic Worker, and lived in the community for two years. Among other productions, Wagner has also performed in and produced for Still Point, the internationally toured Points of Arrival: A Jean Donovan Journey, a play that explores the life and commitment of one of the four North American church women killed in El Salvador in 1980. In 2001, Lisa co-wrote with Virginia Smith Walking with Them, a piece commissioned by the Sisters of Mercy. She is currently touring around the United States and overseas with Strong Women,Haunted by God and Deep Listening, Still Point Theatre Collective’s production on death and dying. Ten years ago, Lisa began a theatre program for women at Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), and recently expanded the program to two other Illinois institutions. Lisa is also the founder and co-director of The Imagination Workshop, a theatre company for adults with developmental disabilities based at Esperanza Community Services. The company has produced original theatre works for over fifteen years. Wagner’s education includes a B.S.E. degree from Emporia State University. Lisa received a Seeds of Hope Award from Wheatridge Ministries in February of 2009. She also recently completed her certification as a spiritual director from the Racine Dominicans in Racine, Wisconsin.
Mindful Mending
We're excited to have local artist Emily Hartford offering a new monthly opportunity to be crafty, sustainable, creative, and spiritual in community. Read the full invitation below from Emily, and plan to join us for this new gathering of creative practice!
Mending has been healing for me: taking what once would’ve been discarded and giving it new life by resisting the urge to give up on what’s broken, instead reclaiming the beauty in the flaws. Join me in community as we practice noticing the places that need mending, both in our garments and lives. We will explore the creative ways in which we can declare to the world that broken simply means an opportunity to be made anew.
What to Bring: Yourself! If you have garments that need mending, bring them to work on as part of our creative practice.
Location: Shalom Place, Community of Christ Temple, 201 S. River Blvd, Independence, MO 64050.
Date & Time: 2nd Thursdays at 7:00 PM.
Cost: There is no cost for this event, but donations are always appreciated.

Sacred Pulse
Join the Center for Living Water monthly for Sacred Pulse in the Community of Christ Temple Mediation Chapel. These unique gatherings are formed around sacred music in reflective space. We incorporate contemporary music, original songs, hymns, and other sources that draw us to the sacred pulse that moves through the world. By singing together, listening deeply, and keeping our hearts open, we encounter new spiritual invitations each time we meet.
We sing music with inclusive language and open space to ponder the divine. Wherever you find yourself on your spiritual and life journey, there is room for you in this community. We hope to see you at Sacred Pulse!
The event begins at 6 PM. The doors open at 5:30 PM! The address for the Temple is 1001 W. Walnut St, Independence, MO 64050. Enter at the East/Main Entrance, which has a circle drive. Follow signs for the parking lot off Temple Drive!
